What blocks it
The issue is not a temporary market gap. Venmo is designed around US onboarding, US-linked payment methods, and a US consumer payments context, so Germany is simply outside the product's intended footprint.
- German residents cannot use it as a normal domestic wallet
- The service is not a substitute for SEPA or local contactless options
- Even travelers should not expect Venmo to solve everyday checkout in Germany
What to use instead
If your goal is paying friends or merchants in Germany, choose a payment tool that is actually wired into European banking or card infrastructure. PayPal, local debit cards, and travel-friendly multi-currency products are more realistic options.
- PayPal is the closest familiar alternative for many users
- For local spending, contactless cards are far more reliable
- Do not waste time trying to force Venmo into a non-US use case
